Urgent Information about Apps, Cybersafety Resources and a Digital Literacy Survey for Parents

Dear Parents,

Last week, School Principals from our area received up-to-date information on cybersafety at a special meeting held by North Sydney Police. An educator from The Office of the Children’s eSafety Commissioner, who presented at the meeting, recommended the following information be passed on to parents.

Apps of concern
There are some popular apps causing concern. Within these apps, unless the settings are changed, anyone can have direct contact with your child via live chat. These apps have an age limit of 13+. Dangers such as the potential for online grooming are of concern to Police.
The most popular of these apps are:
Instagram, musical.ly and    Roblox
The eSafety Commissioner’s Website provides an alphabetical listing of apps, with direct links to change privacy settings.. The links also provide safety guides for parents.

Live Video Streaming Apps of Concern
There are a new wave of video streaming apps which provide live streaming from smart phones, tablets and computers. Some of the apps allow the user to stream live video of themselves or others. These apps can geo-tag the user’s location, causing concerns that a child address could be identified by another person if they were to stream live.
The most popular of these apps are:
Facebook, live.ly and Periscope.

The eSafety Commissioner’s Website provides an alphabetical listing of apps, with direct links to change privacy settings.. The links also provide safety guides for parents.

Be aware: the posting of abusive material (videos. photographs and comments) is on the increase nationally.
Incidents of cyberbullying and Image-based abuse are increasing. While it is more prevalent Australia wide in secondary schools, the eSafety Commissioner has reported an increase in complaints received nationally across primary schools.

Reporting of incidents
If you or your child need to report an incident, the eSafety Commissioner has outlined places to go here.

1. Police
As always for all matters requiring urgent attention call 000.
To report any information you can also call Crimestoppers Australia on 1800 333 000.

2. Contact the website directly to remove the content
The eSafety Commissioner has informed us they have set up partnerships with many of the major companies. They have consultants who can respond quickly to incidents and work to ensure that the photograph, video or offensive comment Is removed quickly. This starts the process of removal as soon as possible.

THEN contact

They have a 24-hour counselling service and the steps to lodge an online report. Here is the  online form.

Typing Club - Login Help Video

Dear Parents,

As you are aware, in response to enquiries on how we can support students to learn to type, we have purchased Typing Club for all students at St Mary's NS.

I have produced a video to assist students and parents to support their child to access their account.

There is great excitement amongst the students from Kindergarten through to year 6, who are keen to learn how to type and use the keyboard properly.

The idea around the program is that students can work through their online lessons at home or school independently and at their own pace. It is designed so that students can work ahead if they choose, which supports individualised learning and differentiation.

It is at the discretion of class teachers as to how they implement Typing Club in their busy curriculum. Some classes may allocate time for Typing Club during class or set it as part of your child's homework tasks.

It would be excellent if each child could complete the lessons for their grade level within the 12 month period. A child can progress to a higher grade level if the course is completed. Let's encourage everyone to learn how to type correctly.

Please contact myself or your child's teacher if you have any further enquiries.

Kind regards,

Mr Timothy Butt

WHEN SHOULD MY CHILD BRING THEIR DEVICE TO SCHOOL?
Please bring from Monday thanks.
It is important students establish routines of bringing their device to school and charging it at night. Some days students may not use them but as with any tool it needs to be on hand as they learn to integrate their device into their learning.
If students don’t bring in their device some days, it could be on those days that an opportunity to use it could present itself and it isn’t at school.

WHAT TYPES OF DEVICES? Ipads have been the most popular choice in younger grades.
A range of chromebooks, windows and mac devices are being used across the school.

SAFETY Students place devices straight into their tub in the morning.

INTERNET Children will use a WIFI Network called PRIMARY SSO. Once we have configured the device, students login through the web browser using their CeNet password.
LABELING DEVICES Please ensure your child’s device is labelled.

CHARGING Devices travel to and from school unless special arrangements are made with Mr Butt in consultation with the class teacher.

STUDENTS OPTING OUT FOR NOW can use a school ipad or chromebook device (we estimate one device between two students in most grades).

PARENT ENQUIRIES Please direct any enquiries around BYOD to my email or you may find answers in the FAQ section of the BYOD website.
